So … what’s the political climate in Uruguay? We visited Argentina, Chile and even a bit into Brazil at Iguazu Falls a few years ago. Mostly toured wineries —really loved the Malbecs in Mendoza area — and stayed in a great finca there. Iguazu was amazing.
Since the 1st March 2025, Yamandú Orsi, far left. Member of the MPP (Movimiento de Participación Popular aka Tupamaros). Too young to have been one of the terrorists who killed in the 60s and 70s. Mind you, the military were no angels. I learnt this, not saw it firsthand, when I arrived in 1979. One thing I have noticed: in comparison with the former president Alberto Lacalle, who knew how to speak, how to ride (important here, many parades are on horseback, representing rural population), was fluent in other languages, and always kept a stiff upper lip even when insulted, this one only manages Spanish, parrots memorised speeches, has a scarce vocabulary, slouches, doesn't know how to behave in front of visitors, says the wrong things. For several months, people here mocked him, artists drew him hiding under his bed because unable to face the public. During parades, no riding, which gained him the bad mood of the rural population, also because he doesn't know how to wear rural attire. I voted for the other candidate, a retired veterinarian, responsible for the partial shutdown and the vaccinations during Covid.
This Orsi sounds similar to our faux El Presidente … stunted vocabulary, a slouch, a jackass when meeting others and indeed saying all the wrong things.
What is Orsi’s following? Is he another fake populist? Does he have any agenda other than retaining power and aggrandizing?
Populist would be the right word, besides having no education and no wish to learn how to behave. A now deceased ex-president, José Mujica, founder of the MPP, a known tupamaro (murderer, bank robber, mayhaps the mastermind behind the kidnapping of the British ambassador Sir Geoffrey Holt Seymour Jackson), was his mentor. Orsi was announced as his delfín, Spanish for successor, like the French dauphin. The masses followed. The younger masses mostly, fed heroic lies about the MPP, that the military were the bad guys, and last lie, that the Frente Amplio, where the MPP is included, was founded to counter the bad military, when in fact the military had to intervene (and become yet another of the South American dictatorships) to counter the FA and MPP. I hope to have explained with my scarce English, so many things happened, some told to me, others I lived. Orsi's family comes from rural stock, hence he should know how to behave with his countrymen. I know one of his cousins, he told me Orsi tried to shake that off, to become more urban, to speak like a city dweller. Lacalle, from a family with deep rural and educated roots (he went to private the British School), learnt how to behave, how to dress, how to ride. In the parades, he shows how he climbs into the saddle without a foothold, greets from the horse taking off his hat. When he stands with others, he dons full rural attire (traje de gaucho), from the hat to the boots, stands straight, speaks clearly. If in urban clothing, always clear colours, showing he belongs to the Partido Nacional . Orsi wears the wrong suit, the wrong combinations, doesn't know how to stand straight yet relaxed. In the presidential photos, big difference. Lacalle stands by himself. Orsi stands going backwards, seeking support from the presidential chair, and looks as if he asking himself, "God, what mess did I just step in? I don't know how to behave!" Very moving … I know quite a bit about Russian history, politics and culture. Putin is clearly driven by “rectifying” the breakup of the Russian / Soviet Empire. Tens of thousands of non-Russians have perished at the hands the Russians under the Tsars and under the Soviet dictatorship.it’s horrific that Trumphuk is sucking up to and apparently beholden to Putin. His abandonment of Ukraine and NATO is just the latest evidence of Trumphukian obsequiousness to Putin. Trumphuk should be impeached for treason!

You are most welcome. This is as far as I may help, from Uruguay. Besides, I learn a lot and am helped reminiscing a lot through what you and your colleagues write. Sadly, history, geography, literature, amongst others, are taught less in Uruguayan grammar schools now, simplified, supposedly to not suffocate young minds. As for courses such as drawing, music, astronomy, Italian, French, Latin, they have been erased. Sigh!!! In Switzerland, we even went for two or three days visiting neighbouring countries, to see history, to see architecture.
